Database of plants on this planet


            


The database can be accessed at www.theplantlist.org contains 1.25 million plant names. The data of agricultural crops such as wheat and rice to ornamental plants like roses and wild ferns here.

Botanists from the United States and Britain, has been providing comprehensive plant database in the world since the end of 2010. The database was created to help experts conservation program, drug makers and agricultural scientists.

Specifically, the data is made to make more accurate naming of plants. According to scientists, regardless of the accuracy of the name of the plant, talks about the life of plants can be confusing and time consuming.

The project involves the creation of this database Boyanic Kew Garden Royal Garden in London and the Missouri Botanical Garden in St.. Louis. Peter Wyse Jackson, President of the Missouri Botanical Garden says, “This is a progress”.

Of the 1.25 million names in the database that, 1.04 million of which is the name of the species. While the rest is the name of “infraspesific” or the names for varieties or subspecies level.

In this database, name the longest are Ornithogalum adseptentrionesvergentulum plant, which is the name of the plant species include the Christmas Star. Meanwhile, the shortest name is Poa fax, the name of the purple flowers of Australia.

Noted, only 300,000 species names are accepted as the standard term. Meanwhile, another 480,000 are synonyms of other names. The remainder, approximately 260,000 names still have not been agreed.

Based on data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 1 in 5 plant species currently threatened with extinction. Conservation efforts in desperate need of a complete database. Plant database is targeted to be completed in 2020.
