US Green Energy Technology (GET) and the Philippines-based biotechnology firm Secura International (SIC) have signed an agreement to construct a $30 million (€23.7 million) biodiesel plant using malunggay oil as feedstock.Malunggay is a versatile plant that can grow anywhere, except in rice-growing, flooded areas. It is suitable for rainfall of less than 1,000 millimeters a year and needs little maintenance and irrigation. An estimated 500 tonnes of oil will be produced a day at the plant.

The Taino Indians, the pre-Columbian inhabitants of the island, called these lagoons “eyes” because of their shape. The tropical forest tour winds through deep green tunnels of over 500 plant species, and visitors can take a cooling dip in one of the eleven lagoons.

A closed landfill in Santa Barbara county is not just being restored with native plants. It also has a pilot project growing oil-rich jatropha for biodiesel. Restoration horticulturists Karen Flagg and Don Hartley of Growing Solutions do restoration education and remediate damaged landscapes -- bringing them back to life.
